While the world is just beginning to understand the decarbonization potential in heat pump solutions, Copeland technologies are already addressing the next challenge beyond energy efficiency: sound. Our scroll compressor technology is turning heads by reaching a new level of quietness while delivering best-in-class efficiency. Heat pumps equipped with these compressors are perfectly suited for any environment - including small plots and densely populated areas. Join the Silent Revolution that brings true peace of mind for installers, owners and their neighbors alike.
The Sound Shift
Urbanization is on the rise
75% of Europe’s population already live in urban areas and cities - and this will rise to 83.7% by 2050. Implementing heat pumps is therefore going to happen on ever smaller plots: In a city like Stuttgart (Germany), the median lot size for new building projects is 370sqm, so half the lots are even smaller than this.
Noise becomes an issue as residential density increases
As residential areas become more densely populated, there will be an increased need for technologies that don’t contribute to noise pollution. According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), at least one in five Europeans is currently exposed to noise levels considered harmful to their health. OEMs are currently investing heavily in reducing the noise levels produced by their heat pumps.
Legal requirements are getting tighter
The first legal noise limits date back to the 1970s. But as research on the mental and physical dangers of noise continues to advance, more and more countries have put in place stricter and more detailed national limits for environmental noise.
The sound shift is happening
Awareness of the impact of noise on quality of life is growing, so both citizens and regulators will also look to heat pumps to play their part in reducing noise emissions. Heat pumps that meet this new demand will gain market share.
Decimating decibels
Data points from our ISO 17025 compliant sound lab reveal: compared to conventional Copeland scroll compressors, our low sound compressors achieve a noise reduction of 10dB(A), especially at high outputs.
Minus 10 dB(A) translates into „half“
Sound is measured on an algorithmic scale. This means that even a few decibels make a big difference. In fact, a reduction of 10dB(A) is equivalent to half of the original sound pressure level.
Hard facts sound best
Sound power, unlike sound intensity and sound pressure, is independent of distance. It is also the compliant way to compare sound levels according to ISO standards 9614 and 3744. When we report sound power, you will not find any fine print about "eco mode" or "night mode". Just transparent data measured in a sound laboratory fully compliant with ISO 17025.
Innovation = low noise + efficiency
The revolutionary thing about Copeland’s low sound compressors is that their quietness does not impact their efficiency: Our low sound scroll compressors in heat pumps reliably achieve the A+++ standard at a reference temperature of 55°C. The improved efficiency corresponds to an increase of 5% in Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP).
